TOPIC: Factors that affect development

INTRODUCTION

You have seen that countries vary greatly in the levels of wealth, the quality of life and the amount of freedom their citizens enjoy. We have also looked at various ways in which people have tried to measure development such as the GDP, GNI, GNI per capita; HDI and other measures. The question that you may be asking your self now is “Why are some countries so much more developed than others and what helps countries to develop or blocks their development?”

LEARNING OUTCOMES

When you have finished this assignment, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain five factors that play a role in the development of a country.
  2. Communicate your understanding in a clear effective visual fashion.
  3. Provide examples of how each factor has operated in South Africa or other countries.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES / TASKS

  1. Study the website listed in the inputs section above and make notes about the factors that promote or prevent development.
  2. Perform the quiz at the end of the website 3 times and record your score each time to obtain your average score.
  3. Design an informative, high-quality classroom poster on a sheet of flipchart paper that outlines five factors that affect development and explains them briefly with one clear example of each from South Africa or other countries.

ASSESSMENT

Your average quiz score will be subtracted from 100 and divided by 10 to give your score for 20% of the assignment.

The poster will contribute to 80% of the assignment mark and will be assessed for:

  • Accuracy of information
  • Detail and comprehensiveness of information
  • Suitable examples
  • Clarity of communication and visual appeal
  • Quality of presentation

Each criterion will be scored on a four-point scale and the total will be multiplied by 4 to givr a score for 80%

Your poster must be submitted on Friday 3 July
